Famous People With Arthritis

Arthritis is a painful disease not only to the commoner but to the connoisseur as well. Physicians too are not an exception. The crippling disease has embraced famous personalities like Dr. Christian Barnard, heart transplant specialist, Hollywood's Kathleen Turner, French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir and many other popular figures.

In the U.S., the disease causes death to 9000 people and disables millions. The drain on the national asset is a whooping $80 billion. The commonest among arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. The severity of this devastating disease will make a person's life worthless to the extent to not even do very simple activities like holding a glass of water which will prove extremely difficult. The onset of the disease causes swelling of joints and inflammation.

Dr. Dr. Christian Barnard: What forced the world famous physician who performed the first heart transplant in humans to take early retirement? It was rheumatoid arthritis which afflicted him since he was young.

Renoir: He was a famous French painter. His works decorate many museums. Was he spared of rheumatoid arthritis? No. He suffered from it for nearly three decades. He was confined to wheelchair and was not even able to hold a paintbrush. It had to be fastened to his fingers. But still he created masterpieces.

Lucille Ball: She suffered from the disease even as early as seventeen years of age. She was administered "horse serum" but of no avail. She suffered for a long time before she could resume her career with limitations.

The other personalities who suffered from the disease are Carol and Richard Eustice, the About.com starters, and Hollywood star Kathleen Turner.
